New 2011-2012 School Year Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Immunization Requirements

All students who will be in 7th-12th grade next year

will need to provide proof of a Pertussis booster.

Pertussis, better known as whooping cough, has reached epidemic levels in California. All students entering grades 7-12 for the 2011-2012 school year will be required to provide proof of immunization for Pertussis (Tdap booster).

Please remember that all students in California schools entering grades 7-12 next year will be required to have this booster before they can attend even one day of school.  Due to the volume of students that this new law affects, we strongly encourage families to have their students vaccinated before the end of the current school year and bring proof of vaccination to the school office by June 1 in order to prevent any delays in enrollment for the new school year.

Adults are also advised to get the Pertussis booster in order to protect themselves and their family.  This is particularly important if they are pregnant or in contact with children under the age of 12 months.  Infants less than a year old have the highest rate of reported disease.  Pertussis can be a serious illness in infants, children, and adults who have a weakened immune system or other diseases such as chronic lung disease.

If your child is 10 years and older and has not yet received the ‘Tdap’ Pertussis booster shot, please contact your doctor or health department!
