Animal Care Classes

ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST I (180 hour program)
ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST II (180 hour program)
Turn your concern and love for animals into a rewarding career. In the beginning course, you will learn general animal care, animal restraint, first aid, terminology, sanitation, and about the domestic breeds of a variety of animals. The course provides hands-on classroom instruction and internship training for entry-level positions in the animal care field. Internship facilities include veterinary hospitals, horse stables, kennels, grooming shops, pet shops and nature centers.
A Tetanus Booster shot is highly recommended.
The advanced course is designed for self-motivated people who want to continue preparing for the animal care industry. Animal nutrition and pet first aid will be covered. During the class, visits to a variety of local animal care businesses will take place.

FLORAL TECHNIQUES AND APPLICATIONS (ADVANCED) (136 hour program)
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of ROP Floral Shop Occupations class, ROP Floral Design class or previous work experience in a floral shop and instructor approval.
If you are enchanted by the beauty and scent of flowers, a career in floral design can bloom for you. You will learn to utilize your creative and artistic talents to arrange flowers, construct corsages, and create floral designs for weddings and other events. Also covered will be industry terminology, creative floral expression, floral merchandising, colors, flower arranging methods and principles, and shop operation. Silk, dried, and fresh flowers and the tools are provided in class. Permanent botanicals will be worked with as well. Beginning students will receive training for a wide variety of entry-level jobs in the floral industry and complete a portfolio of work to aid in their job search. Those with previous floral experience in the advanced class will learn new floral techniques designed to challenge your creative talents and develop your skills and knowledge of the field. In Orange, internship requires additional hours.

AUTOMOTIVE CAREERS (360 hour program)
Put your career in drive by preparing for an entry level position as an automotive technician. You’ll be introduced to a variety of careers in the automotive industry through both theory and hands-on training. Instruction will cover shop safety, hand-tools, auto parts, brakes, engine repair and rebuilding, ignition systems, fuel systems, wheel alignment, new car get-ready, service station skills, and tune-up and suspension systems. Some sections in Orange and Santa Ana include a community classroom internship that will be developed by the instructor. *Special emphasis will be placed on the needs of English language learner students. In Santa Ana, all personal cars serviced in the ROP class will be subject to a $2.00 environmental fee. Completers may be eligible for Community College credit.

Do you enjoy finance and working with people? ROP will teach you ten-key, bank teller skills, customer service, how to sell bank services, and techniques on handling cash. You will also learn about new accounts, checking and savings plans, loan applications, credit cards, and mortgage and loan processing. Most ROP Banking classes include on-the-job internships in banks, finance companies, insurance and stock companies, as well as credit unions and mortgage loan companies. Graduates who complete this ROP class are eligible for entry-level positions as bank tellers, mortgage clerks, bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks.

Learn mortgage loan processing and build a career in the world of finance. The training covers real estate lending and consumer laws and regulations. You will also learn about loan inquiry, application, processing, resolution and closing. Gain practice in completing residential real estate forms and a replica of a conventional loan application with supporting documents, closing, funding, secondary marketing and servicing. Emphasis is placed on learning essential business ‘survival’ skills. Internships will be provided at local community sites.

CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANT (CNA)/HOME HEALTH AIDE (HHA) (252 hour program)
Are you compassionate and interested in helping very ill patients? Class participants will learn how to deliver direct patient care related to the geriatric and/or chronically ill patients. You will be trained for employment as a Nurse Assistant in Long Term Care Facilities and with Home Health Care Agencies. Topics covered include: anatomy and body systems, medical terminology, technology, vital signs and workplace skills. Students will certify in CPR. Practical hospital experience will take place at a local convalescent hospital. Those who successfully complete the course and receive fingerprint clearance are eligible to take the State Competency Exam. Nurse Assistant and Home Health Aide Certificates issued by the California Department of Health Services (DHS) will be issued for those who pass the CNA exam. The following is required for all students: fingerprinting, DHS application, uniform, DMV ID or license, social security #, TB test and physical. (Related personal costs total $265.00)

HOSPITAL ASSISTANT I (190 hour program)
HOSPITAL ASSISTANT II (190 hour program)
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of ROP Hospital Assistant I or CNA/HHA class.
Hospitals need caring people to assist each department. Picture working with adults and/or children in a hospital department such as radiology, physical therapy, emergency room, surgery, dietary, central supply, or a patient care unit. In the Hospital I class, each department will be reviewed. You will learn about first aid skills, Red Cross CPR, anatomy, medical terminology, technology, legal and ethical issues, vital signs, and workplace skills. You will be placed in a community classroom (internship) site to reinforce the skills. In the Orange class, adults will have a refundable $10 uniform deposit fee. In the Santa Ana class, students will have a $4 charge for the CPR card. Students will provide their own uniform. In the Hospital Assistant II class, students will strengthen their skills at one of the following on-the-job training sites: Kaiser Permanente, Chapman Medical Center, UCI Medical Center, or Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). Instruction covers EKG skills, procedure set ups, x-rays, mental health, diseases and disorders. A physical and TB test are required. Other labs and immunizations may be required at certain hospitals.

Teacher Profiles for Public Safety Occupations

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT) (160 hour program)
PREREQUISITE: Students must be 18 years of age within 6 months of course completion date.
Help save lives by learning how to rush to the rescue of people in life-and-death situations. Training will cover related medical theory. You will go through physical skills training and participate in simulations and supervised clinical experience. Class includes 8-hrs. of ambulance ride-along and 8-hrs. of emergency room observation. Men and women who can meet the job requirements are encouraged to take the course. Upon successfully completing this ROP course, you can apply to take the Orange County EMT certification exam. Those who pass typically work as ambulance attendants, emergency room attendants, or in other areas of pre-hospital care.
