Absences, Tardies, and Trips
What do I do when my student is absent?
Please call the absence line before noon to report the absence (714-628-5681) explaining the reason for the absence on each day the student will be out. A note is necessary only if the parent has not made a phone call and is required from the doctor if a student is going to any doctor or dentist appointment. When returning to school after an absence, students will report to the Attendance Office before school begins to obtain their "readmit slip." This slip is to be taken to each class for a teacher signature. A note explaining a tardy must be presented to the Attendance Office for any tardiness.

What do I do if I need to pick up my student early?
Please have your child bring a note to the attendance office before school starts stating the time you will be picking up your child. We will have your child waiting at the attendance office to be signed out.

What do I do if my student will be late? Late students should always check in at the attendance office window before going to class. If a student is more than twenty minutes late, he should sign in with a written excuse of a doctor's note.

What do I do if I have to take my student out of school for a trip or for a medical reason?
Please notify the attendance office with the dates of the absence three or four days prior to the absence. Send your student to school with a note to each teacher informing the teacher of the absence. You may or may not want to ask for homework at this time.

Homework and Absences
What do I do about homework for planned absences?
Please notify the teachers in advance so they may give the students assignments.

How do I get homework for unplanned absences?
A student must be absent for at least two days before making a homework request. Homework requests may be made on the second day before 9:00 a.m. and the homework may be picked up in the office at 3:30 p.m. Homework may be requested through the attendance office by calling 714-997-6366. Do not leave a message on the attendance line requesting homework.

Tutorials
What are tutorials?
Santiago's tutorials are a specific amount of time built into the school day for teachers to connect with students in a smaller environment. Students can expect to make up  work that they missed while absent, re-do assignments that need correcting, work on extra credit opportunities, read quietly, work on homework, or any variety of interesting activities. The teacher will determine how to use the time. We are excited that your student will have these opportunities to improve or expand their learning!

Are tutorials held on specific days and times?
Tutorial sessions will be held EVERY Tuesday and Thursday, between 6th and 7th periods. In order for this to be an effective use of time, we (you, the teachers and the students) need to work together! Please DO NOT plan to pick your child up during tutorial time. Plan doctor appointments after the school day ends. We will expect that this will be honored, to the best of your ability. Remember, this time is a way for your student’s teachers to reach out and help. We thank you for respecting this time.

I need to pick up my child during tutorials. What should I do?
If you have no other option but to pick up your student during tutorial time, please discuss with your student where he or she plans to be during tutorial time and call the office (714) 997-6366 so that the office personnel can more easily locate your child. But remember, we HIGHLY encourage you to plan ahead so that your student is not losing out on this opportunity.

Will there be consequences for missing tutorials?
Students will be assigned after-school detentions for missed tutorial sessions. You will receive a notification home via letter if your student misses a tutorial session, and the detention will be assigned for a following school day. Detentions will be held after school, until 3:50. We have a late bus if your student rides the bus.

Health Office
All students need to go through the health office when feeling ill. Students are not to call parents to pick them up without first seeing the health office clerk.

What do I do if my student is having major surgery and will be missing more than ten days of school?
Notify the attendance office and try to get a doctor's note prior to the surgery so that home schooling can be arranged.

What do I do if my student needs to take medicine (even Tylenol) at school?
Please fill out a "Parent and Physician Request for Medication" form. The physician must sign and give dosage instructions. A parent must deliver medicine to the school health office along with the form.

Calling Home
What do I do if my student needs to contact me?

no cell phone policy. However, cell phones are permitted with a "Bring your own device" form on file.

Cafeteria
How does the cafeteria "credit" system work?
A student or parent deposits cash or a check in an envelop provided by the cafeteria. The student accesses his account by his I. D. number. The account may be used only for food in the cafeteria (not the snack bar). Students may access the account twice a day--for breakfast or a nutrition snack and for lunch. When the account becomes low, the cafeteria will inform the child, and it is the responsibility of the child to inform the parent. For more information contact the cafeteria at 997-6089.
