Principal's Message

Hello West Orange Families and Community,

I am very proud to be returning for my fourth year as principal of West Orange Elementary.  Our students continue to make significant gains in achievement due to the hard work of the staff and students.  We have a dedicated and talented staff that continually strives to improve skills and use innovative strategies to meet the needs of ALL of our students.  I am proud to say that student achievement is the highest it has ever been at West Orange.

I am also proud to report that our parent involvement has been increasing dramatically over the past few years.  We have more parents in the classroom, in our English Language Advisory Committee, and participating in our Parent Teacher Organization (WOSA) meetings and functions.  Parent involvement is extremely important for student success!  This year we are designating a room for the development of a Parent Center.  Parents and West Orange staff will be providing input and assistance in creating a place where parents can work to support teachers and students, as well as access resources to help meet their needs.

Both of my parents worked my entire childhood and adolescence.  I understand that not all families are able to be on campus during the school day.  You don't have to volunteer in the classroom or chaperone fieldtrips in order to be involved.  Perhaps the best way to be involved is to show your children that school is important to you.  This can be done by asking questions about what they are learning and their school day, setting educational goals with your child, providing structured and supported homework time, and having open communication with the teacher.  Parent involvement is one of the greatest factors in a student's success.

I am excited for all of the great success that will come in this new school year.  We are always looking to increase our partnerships with the families and community of West Orange, so please don't hesitate to contact us with questions, concerns, and suggestions.

   Respectfully,
Michael Olander
Principal
